The ancient Temple of Hera in Selinunte…BREATHTAKING!

Immense still standing Temples, columns and structures… From a way of life so long ago, they litter the entire area covering acres of land.  Standing next to the sea, just down the coast near Sciacca, a couple hours drive from Ragusa!

When you arrive it’s hard to believe what you are seeing out in the field.

The enormous pieces of broken columns that are all jumbled into piles…as if the giant hands of the Gods just gave them a toss!

There are 5 temples in the acropolis of Selinunte and only the Temple of Hera has been re-erected.  At it’s peak before 409 BC the city could have held around 30,000 people not counting the slaves.

When you finally arrive to the temple, I guarantee your mouth will be agape!

John, always the joker, makes me laugh …but look at the size of these ancient pieces of old columns!

As we strolled down the path and got closer and closer ….Hera got bigger and bigger!

To have it be so intact was incredible…

Situated perfectly overlooking the sea

Our imaginations ran wild with thoughts of the ancient way of life and of the people that would have walked here…

We were the only two people there and it was very eerie…and very wonderful.

There are no words…

There were bits and shards of pottery laying everywhere

An amazing experience and we couldn’t wait to see the next wonderful area of ruins!  We had to keep pinching each other to remind ourselves that we only lived a couple hours away from all this!
